James Patrick Nugent, January 29 1950 – June 29, 2022 A celebration of the life of Jim (Pat) Nugent took place Saturday July 16th at the family farm in Elmvale. Jim lived a full and meaningful life as a community organizer, ironworker, farmer and baseball coach. Jim leaves Christine, his soulmate for 52 years; their three sons Denis, Brian and James; daughter-in-law Christina Chase-Nugent; and loving grandchildren. The farm was rich with vegetable and flower gardens, fields of yellow winter wheat, good food, relatives, friends, neighbours, and representatives of political organizations Jim and Christine actively supported: The Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist); the South Asian Women Rights Organization, the Ontario Network of Injured Workers Groups; and the Simcoe County Honduras Rights Monitor. A beautiful day was enjoyed with speeches and warmth from all. The evening was topped off with a bonfire. We would like to thank all the workers involved in Jim’s healthcare. Jim (Pat) Nugent, you will be forever present.

It is with sadness we share the news of Bill’s sudden death on April 19, 2022, in his home. William Patrick was born in Scarborough, Ontario on December 14, 1964 to Mike (late) and Mary Bridgeman. Loving husband to Fiona; great Dad to Bill Jr., the pride and joy of his life. Big brother to John (Catherine) and little brother to Mike (Fawn), Doreen, Eileen (Chris), Linda (Glen). Loving uncle to Chris ( Angela), Justin ( Courtney) and Ashley (Leslie) as well as the younger generation; Liam, Delaney, Sadie, Jack, Kaitlyn, Jacob, Felicity, Isabelle, Madison, Charlotte and Peter.

Bill grew up in Pickering, enjoying hockey and baseball in his youth. He went to work in the same field as his Dad, a proud and hard – working member of the Ironworkers Local 721 for 30 + years. His work life was spent in a myriad of jobs, most notably Pearson International Airport, the SkyDome, now known as Roger’s Centre and the Trump Hotel. He was also involved in the first wave of wind turbine installations throughout Ontario and many car plant refits in the region. His most recent work adventures were with a close-knit group of guys, building and repairing power towers around southern Ontario. He was affectionately known in the trade as ‘Billy Ponytail’, as he’s had one since his high school days. He only just cut it off, in the past six months, following his cancer journey. Bill was one of those handy guys. He could watch you build or complete a project then take it on himself, whether it be cars, trucks, interlock or home repairs. He had just retired, preparing to refurbish his home, as he never had time while he was working.

Bill enjoyed travelling, especially these past few years with Fiona and Bill Jr. Of course, his pre-marriage trips were for musical reasons, finding concerts to enjoy. Fiona brought family travel adventure back into his life, often finding school chums in sunny, foreign locales for them to get together with and enjoy some down time. This included Cuba, Mexico and Canadian road trips closeby or PEI, BC and Lake Louise. A trip to China was an adventure for all of them, though Bill felt his resemblance to Budda was daunting in Fiona’s homeland.

Visitation will take place at McEachnie’s, 28 Old Kingston Rd, Ajax on Tuesday April 26 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. The funeral mass will take place at Holy Redeemer Church, 796 Eyer Drive, Pickering, on Wednesday, April 27, at 11:00 am. Light refreshments will follow in the Church Hall. As Bill’s wishes were for cremation, the interment at Resurrection Cemetery in Whitby will be at a later date.

Donations can be made to the charity of your choice. Or, as Bill was so fond of doing, go visit a friend you haven’t seen in a while and share some memories.

Involving himself with the Topham Park Minor Softball Association well beyond his own kids’ participation as equipment manager, coach, and fan. Avid travellers, Bob and Norma visited over 30 countries together. Food often being Bob’s highlight of these (mis)adventures. Silas John Gibbons was born on August 1, 1932 to loving parents Samuel and Susanna. He was the eldest son of seven children, with whom he spent his childhood days along the shores of Fair Island, Newfoundland. Silas passed peacefully on February 13, 2022, at the age of 89 at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home in St. John’s, NL. Silas valued hard work, but also took time to enjoy life’s pleasures. He spent his working life as a sailor and iron worker. His final project was the Hibernia platform – a picture of the finished project and crew was proudly displayed in his home. When not working, Silas enjoyed tending to his gardens, making woodworking projects for his and his family’s homes, taking part as a proud member of the Indian Bay Lions Club, and catching the odd baseball game or episode of Jeopardy. Silas truly shined in family life. He was a devoted husband to Caroline (Carrie), his wife of 64 years. All were in awe of how he wholeheartedly cared for and loved her everyday of their life together.  Silas and Carrie built a life and a family that was strong, happy, and full of love. They had five children, and joyously watched their family grow to include 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren (and still counting). As the family expanded and some wandered a little farther from home, he always managed to keep tabs on each and every member. As our protector, Silas always wanted to know his family was safe, and to ensure they felt his love and support from near and far.  We will remember Silas as a quiet man of few words, with a bright smile and gentle chuckle, steady and stern demeanor that kept everyone on their toes, and an uncanny ability to get us where we had to be on time, or more often than not early. He was deeply loved and we will cherish the memories of our wonderful husband, father, granda, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and dear friend.  Silas was predeceased by his parents Samuel and Susanna, brother Eldred,  and sisters Annie (Nelson – deceased) and Winifred. He is survived by his wife Caroline, daughters Melita (Dwight), Ruth (Scott), Paulette (Roger), Marilyn (David – deceased), and son Eldred (Charly), his sister and brothers, Dinah (Edgar), Samuel (Elizabeth), and Edgar (Jill), his dear grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a large circle of close nieces and nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.  https://www.kittiwakefuneralhomes.ca/obituaries/print?o_id=7872803

It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Wayne St. John, our beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother and cousin. On February 6th, Wayne passed peacefully while holding his son James’ hand, with his wife Melanie, and daughter Tylar by his side. Wayne was devoted to his family and was a proud 57 year Ironworker with Local 721. He lived a full life, finding joy in family, the cottage, sports, fishing, music and photography. He was a die-hard Maple Leafs fan and woke up every Sunday morning to play shinny at St. Mike’s Arena with the Wilsons. For many years he also played in the Milton Flag Football league with his brothers, André and Mike, and his son James. The Milton Football nights were always followed by good parties and great memories at André and Luisa’s. He also enjoyed pick-up basketball at Emery Collegiate with close friends. During the summer, Wayne enjoyed fishing at the cottage, his special place, and golfing, albeit not very well. Wayne spent many summer weekend nights at the Island for corn roasts, fish fries and wing dings. Most winters, Wayne flew south to Florida to spend time with his US family, the MacLeods and the Caccamos. Wayne will be dearly missed by Melanie, James, Tylar, his daughter-in-law Gail, and his grandson and best buddy Dallas. He also leaves behind his brothers, André and Michael, and sisters Colleen, Charlene, Sharon, Kelly, his late sister Lynn and their partners and children. He will also be missed by his many cousins and his cottage family on Ware’s Road (too numerous to name). Wayne had been on his cancer journey for 3.5 years with never a complaint about his ongoing loss of quality of life. We thank the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Dorothy Ley Hospice and home nursing teams for their incredible care and support. The family will share information about a celebration of life to be held later this year. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to Princess Margaret Cancer Centre or Dorothy Ley Hospice. https://www.arbormemorial.ca/glendale/obituaries/wayne-vincent-st-john/78796
